The Braveheart costume we will be focusing on will that of William Wallace, portrayed by Mel Gibbson. I will leave all relevant links below to all the items needed to complete this costume along with information on the products as well.
Braveheart kilt fabric
I tried to find kilts that were ready made for you to buy but the ones I got were awful and would in no way recommend them. I decided to make my own as it didn’t seem too difficult. I followed this video as a guide. I will link it below as they do a great job in explaining the whole process than I ever could. I went for the best matching fabric that I could find from reputable sources. You will need a sewing machine to make this.
William Wallace armor
For the William Wallace armor, I went for a Viking inspired style of armor, of which I got on amazon. It is made from real leather that feels fantastic. The shoulder and back straps are comfortable and don’t irritate the skin. One of the most pleasing features is the adjustability. This allows me to get the perfect fit all round. Overall a well-made product that I highly recommend, perfect for the Braveheart costume.
For the Braveheart Makeup, only two colors are used, blue and white. I have included an image above as a guide.
William Wallace sword
For the sword used by William Wallace, I found a seller on amazon that had a William Wallace sword for sale. My first impressions of the sword were how big it was and well it was balanced, I was very surprised given the price. The blade is made from stainless steel that is double edged. The blade is polished as well. The blade is not razor sharp but I wouldn’t go swing it carelessly around the place. A very good Braveheart costume sword, especially considering how affordable it is.
William Wallace shield
For the William Wallace shield, I found a Viking shield for sale on Amazon. This might be expensive for some but really when it comes to props that are made well nothing is cheap. This is a beautifully made Viking shield. It has a good amount of weight though it without being overly heavily. The build quality is awesome. it has stainless steel trimming and beautiful dark stained wood finish. The back is covered in felt. I made a strap for mine that would hang on my back as I didn’t want to carry it all day. Overall a great shield that is a much in my opinion for the Braveheart costume.
The Braveheart costume boots, I got on amazon. I went for a Renaissance type of shoe. It doesn’t tell me on the page what the shoe is made from but based on the look and feel of it, I would suggest it is made from a combination of cotton, polyester with a synthetic sole. They were fairly comfortable for the most part. I found them quite lightweight as well. Overall a good pair of boots and a nice look to the Braveheart costume.
